Apo Reef
I've been dreaming of this island for four years already.
It started when I read a blog and somehow it captured my interest to explore the island.
In fact, this year (2015), I included it as part of my travel bucket list.
And unexpectedly, Red Chuca posted an invite in his facebook and it unfolded. Let me take you back to our adventure in this island called Apo Reef.

DAY 1
early morning arrival at Abra de Ilog Port
How to get there

By LAND and SEA
From Buendia, Pasay or Cubao, ride a bus (either Jam, DLTB or Starex) en route to Batangas City Pier. Travel time from Buendia to Batangas City using the ACTEX route is more or less 2 hours. Alight at Batangas City Pier, then board the RoRo boat to Abra de Ilog. Montenegro Shipping Lines is servicing the route.  Fare is P270 and travel time is 3 hours. From Abra de Ilog Port, board either a van or bus to Sablayan Port. Travel time to the port is 2.5 - 3 hours or 124 kilometers (209 kilometers to San Jose). Fare using the van is P220. Alight at Sablayan Market and hire a tricycle ride to Sablayan Port. Fare using the trike is P10. Reaching Sablayan port, hire a boat going to Apo Reef. Rental of the boat is P8,000 -10,000. Travel time is 3 hours.

BY AIR and LAND
The fastest way to reach Sablayan is by air. Daily 45-minute flights are offered by Cebu Pacific in San Jose, Mindoro. Then, two to three hour land  travel by bus or van will take you to Sablayan.

Small chartered planes, upon prior arrangements, could land directly in Sablayan Airport or Mamburao Airport. Mamburao is a two-hour land trip to Sablayan.

Se planes can also land near Pandan Island, along the coastlines of Sablayan and in Apo Reef.

OTHER WAYS
Tour-operated boats from Manila, Batangas, Palawan or Puerto Galera could also be pre-arranged. Coron, Palawan is just 3 hours away from Apo Reef.

From Visayas, dailysix-hour boat trips from Libertad, Antique to San Jose are available, followed by a two to three hour land trip to Sablayan.

Sabang Hanging Bridge
Rico and I agreed to meet in Batangas City. I arrived 10:30 pm while Rico arrived a couple of minutes after. We are not new to Red's tour. In fact, this is my 3rd tour and Rico's 2nd tour with Red. But the twist is the fact that we are joining a new group (except for Bianca whom we met in Fortune Island). And that makes the tour exciting since you are going to meet, mingle, and explore with new set of friends.

Around 11:40 pm, Red and the rest arrived. We waited until 1 am and bought our ticket for our RoRo ride to Abra de Ilog. We boarded the boat around 2 am.

It was not a pleasant ride. I was not able to sleep. But the feeling of excitement compensated for whatever inconvenience I experienced.

waiting time in Sablayan market
Upon arrival in Abra de Ilog Port, we boarded the van to Sablayan Port. We took our breakfast in Sablayan market, waited a bit, bought our supplies, and past 10 am, we went towards Sablayan Port.

Weather was really nice that day while we were boarding the boat.

We traveled from Manila to Batangas City Pier for 2 hours.
We traveled and endured the RoRo boat for 3 hours.
We traveled from Abra de Ilog to Sablayan Port for 2 hours.
We waited for 3 hours.
There is no stopping us now!
On with the journey to Apo Reef!

Apo Reef
And after 3 hours, we passed Pinanggaan Island and Apo Reef was within sight.

Apo Reef is the largest atoll-like reef in Asia. It is a 29 hectare of white sand island and is the favorite nesting grounds for hawksbill and green sea turtles. There are other two islets which are favorite spots for migrating birds. But for tourists, it is the favorite site for snorkeling and diving.

It was already past 1 pm when we arrived at the island.
We did not mind our late lunch.
We are in Apo Reef.

Kitchen

Red and Dolly immediately fixed our lunch.
While the rest was busy pitching their tent and taking souvenir pictures.

Red while cooking our lunch
Past 2 pm, we were able to take our lunch.
Thanks to Red and the group's concerted effort of preparing lunch.

trail to lighthouse

After eating lunch, I immediately went to the lighthouse. Our tour guide "Mang Jojo" conveyed that the group will proceed to the lighthouse at around 5 pm. But I did not have the luxury of waiting, I went alone.

After 10 minutes of walking, I reached the Apo Reef Lighthouse. The sun was about to set, it was past 5 pm and I immediately climbed the ladder towards the top of the lighthouse.

pointing to Coron
From the top of the lighthouse, you can see Coron, Palawan. From Apo Reef, Coron be reached by boat within 3 hours. From San Jose, Occidental Mindoro, the boat ride to Coron is 8 hours.
Lagoon
The Apo Reef lighthouse gives you a 360 degree view of the entire island. This is the best spot to watch the sunset and to have an aerial view of the lagoon.

top view

Around 5:30 pm, the rest of the group arrived.

Rico, Earl, Jireh and Dana took their respective souvenir pictures.

Jireh, Earl, Rod and Max
And we watched the sunset.

I did not wait for the entire sunset. I descended and headed back to the camping site.

I played a bit of beach volleyball with Rod and Neil and afterwards, proceeded to the kitchen.

Red,  Max, Joshua, Dolly and I started our drinking spree while Red was busy cooking our dinner. They prepared a very sumptuous and mouth-watering dinner consisting of grilled pork, grilled squid, grilled fish and some veggies!

Past 7 pm, the inevitable happened. It's dinner time!

After dinner, we continued with our drinking spree of Emperador light. But this time, the rest joined the spree. While we were drinking, we played our favorite game connect the word. We were having the best time of our lives!

I did not remember what happened next... =)

DAY 2

Around 5 am, I woke up and saw the enchanting and captivating horizon unfolding in the midst of the tranquility in Apo Reef. Behold the sunrise in Apo Reef.

After the sunrise, I took a bath and headed towards the lagoon. Good thing Rod was ready for the adventure and we headed to our destination.

Rod led the way to the lagoon.

We even crossed a bamboo bridge in order to reach the lagoon.

And after 10 minutes, we reached the Lagoon.

After a couple of minutes, the rest of the group arrived with Mang Jojo. Mang Jojo retrieved the bamboo raft for our ride in the lagoon.

From the lagoon, you can see the lighthouse. The tour was good for 15-20 minutes.

The boat ride was a bit slow. But we did not mind. We were enjoying the cruise.

We took our souvenir pictures along the way.

We alighted at the opposite end and headed back to the camp for our breakfast.

While heading back, we passed the Apo Reef Natural Park Protected Area Office.

We took our breakfast, packed, cleaned the area and again, took our souvenir pictures.

Past 9 am, we were boarding the boat for our snorkeling adventure.

Within a few minutes, we were enjoying it!

The snorkeling experience in Apo Reef is totally different from my previous snorkeling. While the boat was slowly moving, we were dragged by the boat by holding to a rope and you do not have to swim. You simply have to enjoy! =)

After 30 minutes, we transferred to the nearby island called Pinanggaan Island and continued our snorkeling adventure.

After our snorkeling experience, we headed back to Sablayan Port.
But along the way, we encountered DOLPHINS!
Yup! and there were 6-8 dolphins swimming and playing around with us.
We were shouting at the top of our lungs and the others whistling to attract the dolphins.
A rare treat indeed!

We played another set of games along the way back and we were not mindful that time flew.

After more than 2 hours, we arrived at Pandan Island.

Pandan island is the nearest tourist spot in Sablayan and is known for its Sea Turtle or Pawikans! It is a tropical island retreat and one of the top resorts in the Philippines. The island can be reached by a twenty-minute boat ride from Sablayan mainland.

Activities in the island:
scuba diving
snorkeling
swimming
kayaking

We took our late lunch in the island.

After eating, we had our pawikan encounter!
On my part, I was able to see/encounter 3 pawikans.

After 1 hour, we headed back to Sablayan Port and fixed ourselves.
Around 7 pm, we boarded the van to Abra de Ilog.
And by stroke of luck, we had a flat tire!!
It was already 8:30 pm when it was finally done replacing.
The RoRo ride was slated 10 pm.
Oops, I thought we'd missed it!

We arrived 10:20 and the RoRo was set to leave at exactly 10:30 pm.

Luck was on our side, we made it!!! =)

WE definitely enjoyed Apo Reef!

This is not a blog.
This is a photo album!
Kidding aside, a regular blog contains 8-10 pictures but this one has 67 pictures!
Yup, 67 pictures! Why 67 pictures?
It was Red Chuca's 25th birthday celebration in Calaguas and I promised myself that this will be the last time I will be going to Calaguas. Please do not get me wrong.
Calaguas is one of the best white-beach, crystal-clear water island destinations in the Philippines. But it's my third time to step on this island and I felt like I need to explore the other 7.100 islands in the Philippines. Next year (2016), part of my travel bucket list are the sandbars (Bohol, Iloilo, and Leyte) in the Philippines, the islands in the extreme north (Babuyan, Calayan, and Camiguin), and the islands of Palawan (Onuk, Balabac, Port Barton, and San Vicente).

crystal-clear water of Calaguas
Anyway, again it was Red Chuca's birthday bash in Calaguas! Last year was in Jomalig and we had 44 participants and this year, we had only 20 participants. The numbers did not matter. Because both tours were extremely entertaining, fun, and full of surprises! Quoting my tour mate Ryan, "it was definitely a blast!"

I tried my best to convince Red to have a part two of Jomalig. We even talked about placing it in Babuyan islands! But Calaguas turned out to be the best alternative.

Red set the meeting place and time at EDSA-Buendia MRT station near Shell station at exactly 8:30 pm but we left past 9:30 pm since it was a Friday.

Paracale Port

How to get there (CALAGUAS)

Terminal in Buendia is in LRT-Taft station.

Terminal in Pasay is near Winston Hotel or Sogo Hotel.

BY VAN
You can also choose to hire a van!
LeunammeE Tour Services (Tatay Manny)
Mang Cesar - 0929-559-1121
Mang Tata - 0933-538-4550
Some tourists hire a van from Manila directly to Paracale.

Where to alight (in case of bus travel)? You have two options.

Option 1 - Daet - Take the van going to Paracale. The terminal of the van is in the Daet market near the church and the cost is P180.00. Travel time is approximately 1 hour (there is another port in Vinzons).

Option 2 - Alight at Talubatibo, Labo (crossing going to Paracale), hire a tricyle for P300 OR wait for the bus going to Paracale (every 30-40 minutes). Travel time is 30 minutes only.

If you are traveling alone, it's better to go to Daet and pay the P180 or wait for the bus.

But if you are traveling with your friends, it's better to hire the tricycle and divide the amount of fare with your friends.

BY PLANE
Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines have regular direct flights to Naga.
From Naga City (in case you opted using the plane) or in case you are coming from CamSur Watersports Complex (CWC), go to LCC Mall terminal for the van going to Daet. From Naga City to Daet is 2 hours and the fare is P180.00. First trip is 5 am and the last trip to Date is 8 pm. Then reaching Daet, take the van going to Paracale. Travel time to the port is 1 hour.

What port? There are two choices!

There are two ports going to Calaguas Island, namely the Paracale Port and the Vinzons Port. Travel time in Paracale port to Calaguas Island is 1.5 hours. Travel time from Vinzons to Calaguas Island is 2-3 hours.

Better choice is the Paracale Port.  But if you are traveling in a big group (i.e 10-20 pax), Vinzons port is the better choice.

Suppose you are traveling alone, the boat ride in the public transport boat (not the boat rent) in Vinzons is only P500.

Hire a boat going to Calaguas Island (the fee includes the island hopping).

DAY 1

Going back to my photo album.

After our death-defying and nerve wracking van travel to Paracale for almost 7 hours, we reached Paracale Port way ahead of the designated time (6 am). After our breakfast, Red, Francis, Rico and I headed to the market and bought the necessary supplies for the trip. We boarded the boat going to Calaguas past 6 am.

Along the voyage, we passed the mining area in Paracale. They say gold can be mined in this place.

The boat ride was one of the best rides I've had this summer. The sea was calm, the sun was scorching hot and sky was painted blue.

Rico was excited!
I felt the excitement along the way. Even though it was my third time (second time this summer), every trip was memorable.

After 30 minutes, some of my tour mates were already dozing off and were heading to dreamland. The last night's van travel was definitely felt and was making its repercussions.

On the other hand, at the end of the boat, Robz, AJ, Francis and I were busy consuming our leftover brandy from last night's drinking spree inside the van. It was 7 am and getting intoxicated early that day was not part of the plan. But what the heck! It was Red's birthday! =)

After nearly 2 hours, we arrived in Mahabang Buhangin. The sting of the brandy was felt by Robz, Francis and I when we were dragging the supplies and equipment along the shoreline towards our cottage.

Calaguas is a sight for a sore eyes! I will miss this place!

Calaguas has definitely changed! It has now cottages, comfort rooms and other amenities.

Red chose the part away from the beach since there were so many tourists that day so that we could have our peace and quiet atmosphere.

First part of the agenda was to cook our lunch and we helped in preparing our lunch.

Some of my tour mates chose to rejuvenate and relax for the long day ahead.

Exactly 12 noon, we were ready for our lunch! A rare event indeed. Usually, we will have our lunch around 1 pm. Hooray for our concerted efforts that day!

Before our first boodle fight, pictures/selfies please!

And the boodle fight started, concentrate muna sa food!

Red, standing

Red was greeted by everybody for his birthday that day.

Adobo Journey (Red), Lakwatserong Kusinero (Francis) and Smart Backpacker (Jun)

Finally, I met Francis a.k.a. "Lakwatserong Kusinero".

The aftermath

After 20 minutes, the fight was over!

We let digestion take its normal course and after 25 minutes, we headed back to the beach!

Karinini Zee and MaCherie D'amour were kind enough to give me their jump shots along the stroll.

Mahabang Buhangin

ABOUT CALAGUAS

There are already accommodations.
Tent is the cheapest (P300)
Better to bring your own tent, hammock or sleeping bag.
Better to bring and cook your own food.
Bring your own water, drinks and supplies.
It has toilets.
Try Makalubo Island.
No signal in  the island.
Go to the other side of the island called - Tinago Island

We tried our best! We took several jump shots and this shot was the best shot.

We were enjoying the waters of Calaguas!

How about an underwater shot!

A group shot!

After taking a dip in the beach, we took our merienda, pasta!
Buti na lang at birthday ni Red! =)
At this juncture, Angela and Kevin joined the tour.

Rico at the top of the mountain in Calaguas
Later that day, past 5 pm, Rico and I trekked and ascended on the upper part of Calaguas. A must-try adventure while you are in Calaguas. Guide fee was P100.

We waited for the sunset and enjoyed the scenery at the top of the mountain. Entrance fee was P20.

The tourists were definitely enjoying the scenery and landscapes of Calaguas.

Past 5:30 pm, sunset was unfolding.

But the clouds were also there to witness the sunset and it was not a good one after all. Fair enough.

We headed back to the beach and then went back to our cottages. Past 7 pm, Boodle Fight No. 2 erupted! Let's get it on guys!

Dinner was enjoyed by everyone! Smiles were written in everybody's face!

But the finale that day was the most awaited! The drinking spree and socials.

Fruit punch was prepared by Red for his guests!

While the others were drinking, the others were swimming. Past 11 pm, I hit the sack.

DAY 2

I chose not to get drunk that night. Part of my plan was to trek the following day. I woke up 4:30 am, fixed myself, and took a light breakfast courtesy of Francis. I hired a guide (P200) for my trek that day. I also chose not to join any group because I know for a fact that my trek will be long, tiring, muscle-straining, and bone-breaking.

My first destination was the community in Calaguas. It took me only 12 minutes of brisk-walking and I reached the community and the port in Calaguas.

The port in Calaguas

I took a couple of pictures and headed to Tinago.

The mangrove spot is one of my favorite spots in the trek because it is the only shelter I have against the sun.

The terrain of the hills and mountains in Calaguas reminded me of Batanes. I miss Batanes!

The sight along the trek relaxed my aching feet but I did not mind it. I was enjoying the view!

After 40 minutes of walking, we reached Tinago. Tinago is the other side of Calaguas.

Then, we headed back to our next stop.

I placed several pictures in this blog for you to have a feel of the trek in Calaguas. An activity that you should not miss while you are in Calaguas. This spot by the way is the best spot to have your sunrise viewing. Best time to have the trek is from 5 am - 9 am only.

We headed to the highest peak in Calaguas, the Evacuation Center.

I was losing my strength while ascending, the ascent was tough!

But once you are at the top, again, your effort and pain will be compensated.

We headed towards the other side of Calaguas and a different view of the beach was seen.

Even the breathtaking landscapes were totally rejuvenating. Out of my excitement for the day's trek, I forgot to bring any water or energy drink.

Another view of Mahabang Buhangin from a different perspective.

Around 8 am, I arrived back to our cottage and after several minutes, breakfast was served.

Boodle Fight No. 3!

Majority of the group went back to the beach and enjoyed their swim while the rest took a respite in their hammocks.

Past 11 am, lunch was served. But this time it was not a boodle fight.

Past 1 pm, we were onboard the boat en route back to Paracale Port. While Angela and Kevin stayed in Calaguas.

We arrived 4 pm and boarded the van back to Manila.

I thought my blog was over. But we had to take our dinner and we stopped in Barangay Tabugon, Sta. Elena, Camarines Norte.

While taking our dinner, I felt a bit of sadness. I know our tour was about to end.
Along the route, we exchanged ghost stories. Robz's and Cherie's stories were the best. I supplied the entertainment part of making everyone laugh along the way.

Past 12 am, Rico and I alighted in Sto. Tomas, Batangas.
I bid everyone goodbye.

Fortune Island Resort is the one managing ALL the tours in Fortune Island.
They also provide scuba diving and island hopping tour.
They also have ATV rentals.
It is co-owned by Mr. Kim and Mr. Steve whom I both met in the resort.

It is BETTER if the resort will be the one to ARRANGE your boat to the island. If you are traveling alone or 2 or more, they will the the one to squeeze you in other tours. Look for Maricel, Jenny or Erika.

Entrance fee to the island
P300 - day tour
P400 - overnight

ALTERNATIVELY - (But I still RECOMMEND that Fortune Island Resort be the one to arrange your boat rental needs.)

Day Tour - P4,000.00 (10 pax only)
Overnight Tour - P6,000 (10 pax) / P8,000-9,000 (15 pax)

Best time to visit the island is between the months of March to June only. It is better to travel in a large group (8-10 pax) to minimize the cost of renting a boat.

Jenny is the one wearing blue and Maricel is wearing gray inside the bar.

Red Chuca arranged the tour, food, and the boat rental.
Again, please look for Maricel or Jenny at the resort.

Past 7 am, we were boarding the boat en route to Fortune Island.

Travel time by boat to the island is more or less 1 hour depending on the weather.
There is a helipad in the island.

After 30 minutes, we could already see the island.

And after 1 hour, we arrived at Fortune Island.

It was my second time to see the island.

The beach is white sand. There are portions of the beach with powdered white sand and there are portions with rough white sand and shells abound in the shore.  Aside from our group, there were 7-8 other groups who will spend the night in the island.

We went to our camping site. But Faty and I decided to go immediately to the top of the ruins in order to take advantage of the blue sky and sunny weather that day.

From the top of the ruins, you can have the bird's eye-view of the island. I thought I was in Parthenon in Greece! The Parthenon is a temple on the Athenian Acropolis, Greece, dedicated to the goddess Athena, whom the people of Athens considered their patron.

Then, we went further to the highest point in the ruins and explored it.

Behold the ruins of Fortune Island!

Fortune Island is a photographer's dream! A sight to behold and get lost!

After taking a multitude of pictures, we decided to descend.

Before 12 noon, we took our lunch. Hooray for Red Chuca who made our lunch ahead of time. A sigh of relief! =)

After taking lunch, we rested for 2 hours and then headed to the other side of the island.

The trek was good only for 10-12 minutes.

The landscapes in Fortune Island are breathtaking!

And the site was the site for CLIFF JUMPING or CLIFF DIVING!
First to jump was Matias (German) followed by Alfred who jumped with his GoPro!

Erwin, Basil, Dana (Natalie Del Rosario), Dolly,  and Norry also jumped!
Last to jump on our group was Norry.

But aside from us several groups jumped that day. Noteworthy is the group from Baguio City.

The most beautiful girl to jump that day was from Baguio City! And I was not able to get her name, (per comment, her name is Justine Nicole Sison).

After cliff jumping, we decided to go to the other spot for cliff jumping.

But this one is not as high or dangerous as the previous one. It is located just beside the beach area.

Again, we rested fro 1 hour and thereafter, headed to the shark infested area.

But after waiting for nearly an hour, not a sight of a shark appeared.

Instead, we went back to the beach area and enjoyed the waters of Fortune Island.

And the best part of it was - SNORKELING!

You will love the corals of Fortune Island!

While the rest took their souvenir pictures.

Past 5 pm, we went back to the top of the ruins. But this time for sunset viewing.

I met a group who were also waiting for the sunset to unfold. I forgot their names.

Around 5:50 pm, sunset was in the horizon.

The sunset in Fortune Island is quite different because it is situated beside the cliff and you have to be creative to get your own shot.

Then, later that evening, we took our dinner.

After dinner, the drinking spree. A lot happened before, during, and after the drinking spree which I am not at liberty to say.  We played several games and Denise emerged as the victor.

It rained twice that night. Woke up thrice that night.

There was no sunrise the following morning. But we still enjoyed the breakfast the following morning.

Around 10 am, we headed back to Nasugbu mainland.
We fixed ourselves and headed back to Manila. We made a stopover in Mahogany Market in Tagaytay City for our lunch. And I alighted in Olivares.

It was definitely

About the Island
According to the locals, it is owned by Mr. Leviste.

There is no electricity nor drinking water in the island. No food outlet or canteen. But it has mobile network signals of Smart and Globe. There is a toilet but there is no water. It is better to bring your wet wipes or use salt water for toilet purposes.

There is a lighthouse in the island and a helipad.
The shipwreck is gone!

Tips -
1. It is better to negotiate your rent of the boat directly to Fortune Island Resort..
2. It is better to bring supplies of water in the island.
3. There is no tent rental in the resort or island. Please bring your own. Using hammock is neither an option. Sleeping bags can be used as there are dilapidated shelters in the island.
4. The waves can be so strong that you will get wet while boarding or onboard the boat, better bring a spare clothing just for this purpose.

5. Do not forget to bring a camera! Enjoy Fortune Island!

Camaya Sands and Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar, Bataan

The historical place of Bataan has many tourist spots to offer
and here are two of the best spots.

May 2015

After so many attempts to go to these two spots, finally I was given the chance to visit them in just one day.

From Tanauan City, Batangas, I boarded the bus going to Buendia-Taft, Pasay and alighted at the LRT station. I boarded the LRT going to Monumento and alighted at Doroteo Jose. In Doroteo Jose, there are two bus companies to choose from namely: Bataan Transit and Genesis. I chose the latter. There are also bus companies in Cubao. I boarded the bus going to Mariveles. It took me 3 hours before reaching the town of Mariveles. From Manila, it is 171 kilometers and the fare was P280 (same in Cubao)

Reaching Mariveles, the problem started when I was told that there are no public transport going to Camaya Coast or Camaya Sands and the only option was to hire a tricycle for the amount of P450. I asked for a discount and fair enough, I was able to hire the trike for P400. The ride going to Camaya Sands is 16 kilometers from the town or 50 minute ride from the town. So, it's a lot better to bring your own car for this trip. The ferry ride from Manila was no longer available.

After an hour, I was able to reach the entrance and I was told by the security guards that there slated rides to the resort. I arrived 12 noon and the next ride was 1:30. I told them that I cannot wait that long. Luck was on my side, they called a guy who was working inside and the guy gave me ride to the resort. I asked the trike driver to wait for me at the gate. And told him, I will give him a total of P600 if he would wait and he will be my ride back to town. The driver agreed for P650.

I was happy even though my rides were a bit high. I've been dreaming of this resort for months and finally, I'm here! The motorcycle ride was smooth and relaxing. The terrain and the landscapes of the resort were amazing. From the entrance to the registration area, it is 3 kilometers.

From the top of the highway going to the resort, you can have a bird's eye-view of Camaya Sands. I was already excited!

After 15 minutes, I was already at the registration area. I paid P550 for the entrance and it includes the use of the beach, swimming pools and a free lunch.

Camaya Sands

I roamed around the beach area and took souvenir pictures. There were minimal tourists that day. Good thing it was a Thursday.

I have not seen the other beaches in Bataan. But this one is white sand.

What I love about this resort is the view and the ambience. It's cozy and relaxing!

Even the huts and cottages are world-class.

And they even have an infinity pool.

After staying for more than an hour and taking my free lunch, I decided to go to my other destination. Two-thumbs up for this resort!

I boarded the trike back to the town of Mariveles and alighted at Genesis bus station. I boarded the bus going back to Manila. I told the conductor that I was going to Las Cas Filipinas De Acuzar. I was told that I have to alight at Pilar crossing in Barangay Alaule. I paid P75 for the 42-kilometer ride. I alighted at crossing and had two choices, namely: a mini-bus for P30 or a jeepney ride. The jeepney ride was better but I took the mini-bus going to Acuzar.

I alighted at the trike station and paid P20 for the ride going to Acuzar.

Las Islas Filipinas De Acuzar

I went to the registration area and paid P685 for the entrance fee with tour. But I did not join the tour due to lack of time. I have to go back to Batangas that day. And so I roamed around the area on foot and without a guide.

The place reminded me of the heritage houses of Vigan, Taal, Marinduque, Intramuros and Sariaya. By the way, the P685 payment includes a free towel and a welcome drink. There is P800 plus payment for the food. I chose the P685.

They also have an infinity pool.

The view was simply awesome and spectacular as if I was not in the Philippines!

Good thing I have my action camera and I was able to take pictures.

The houses are well-preserved. According to what I have seen in TV, these houses are from the different parts of the country and they were bought, transferred piece-by-piece and assembled here in Bataan.

I love this place!

The designs and facade of the heritage houses are way beyond comparison.

My only regret was I was not able to join the tour. One of the amenities of joining the actual tour is that you can enter the heritage houses.

But the best part of the area is the hotel and I was not able to enter the hotel!

After staying for nearly 2 hours, I decided to go back to Batangas.

I boarded another tricycle to the jeepney station going to Balanga. The fare was P30 and the ride was good for 45 minutes.  In Balanga, again, I boarded the Genesis bus going to Avenida. The bus ride was good for almost 3 hours and the fare was P200 (118 kilometers). Then, I boarded the bus going to Batangas.

Bataan is simply Amazing!

My 7th travel in Mindanao and the place
never ceases to amaze me...

It was my second time to join the Journeying James Tours. The first one was in Fortune Island about a week before this tour. Normally, when I go to Mindanao, I travel alone and this tour was the first time I had companions. Traveling alone has its own perks and benefits. But nonetheless, for a change, I decided to join this packaged tour called Lake Sebu and Asik-Asik Falls: Culture, Nature, and Adventure Tour.

Day 1
GENERAL SANTOS CITY

just arrived in General Santos

The tour was supposed to start June 11, 2015 at General Santos City. But Faty Jayme and I decided to take the Davao Airport instead of General Santos Airport for the simple reason that it was a lot cheaper. We arrived in Davao 10 pm, flagged a taxi, proceeded to the hotel (P250 only for 12 hours at the D Morvies)) and called it a night. The following morning (June 11, 2015) we went to Ecoland Terminal in Davao and boarded the Yellow Bus Lines to General Santos. Travel time was 3 hours. The fare was P170 and we traveled 131 kilometers. Along the way, we passed Digos and we were just 88 kilometers from General Santos City. Around 8:45 am, we arrived in General Santos and proceeded to SM GenSan. Exactly 9 am, we met Red Chuca and the rest of our fellow travelers.

Pineapple planation
We were fetched by the van and our tour guide that day was Mr. Roy Ungcal. From General Santos, we proceeded to Koronadal City. Travel time to Koronadal is more or less 1 hour or 51 kilometers. Koronadal to Lake Sebu is 41 kilometers.

Along the way, we stopped at the vast pineapple plantation area of DoleFil. From the said area, we were able to see also Mt. Matutum.

souvenir pictures please
We took souvenir pictures and after 15 minutes, continued to our destination.

It was my second time to visit Koronadal. The first time was in 2012.

Tri-people Monument

We headed to Surallah City and stopped at the Tri-people Monument for more souvenir pictures. Then, proceeded to Lake Sebu.

Koronadal to Lake Sebu is 41 kilometers and we endured another 45 minutes of travel.

Lake Lahit
Finally, we reached Lake Sebu and we passed by Lake Lahit. I felt the excitement in the air as we were nearing our hotel. There were only 8 of us who joined this tour and they are Raine, Faty, Gzel, Red, Nilo, Lawrence, Beck and I.

Mountain Log Resort

We were billeted in Mountain Log Resort, one of the best resorts in Lake Sebu, if not the best!

The view in the resort gave us the thrill to start with the tour. And they served a very sumptuous lunch.

After taking our lunch and resting a bit, we proceeded to Lake Sebu School of Living Traditions. Part of the tour was the cultural interaction with the T' Boli. It was my first time to see the musical instruments, the cultural dance, and the way of life of the T'Boli.

Everybody enjoyed the various presentations of the T'Boli ranging  from playing their musical instruments and their cultural dance presentations.

At the end of the captivating presentation, we took our souvenir picture with the T'Boli.

Thereafter, we proceed to the house of the late Lang Dulay, the revered dream weaver and the living legend. Unfortunately, she passed away a month before our slated visit.

Roy explained thoroughly the process on how to the T'Boli weave their products called T'nalak.

Last stop for the day was at the T'Boli Museum.

Again, Roy explained the history, way of life, and the artifacts of the T'Boli.

Past 5 pm, we went back to Mountain Log Resort and I waited for the sunset. But it was cloudy that day and I just caught a glimpse of the sunset. Louie Pacardo aka Nomad's Perspective joined us that night at the resort.

Day 2

I woke early the following morning to catch the sunrise but it was cloudy again. Faty and I climbed the tower and waited for the sunrise as it unfolded in the horizon. There was a sea of clouds!

Even though the sunrise was not that spectacular, the view from the tower of Mountain Log Resort was really fascinating. I did not mind seeing the sunrise. I was equally treated with an amazing view of  Lake Sebu.

From the tower, you can have a 360 degree-view of Lake Sebu.

The Tower
Good thing Mountain Log Resort has this facility and the only resort which has this facility in Lake Sebu.

After watching the sunrise, Faty and I proceeded to the lake to watch the Water Lily and Lotus as they bloom in the morning.

I hired a boat for P100 and we went to the other side of the lake to see the multitude of Lotus plants.

It was my first time to have this experience. My first Lotus encounter!

Falls No. 1
After taking our breakfast, we proceeded to the main attraction. We headed to the seven falls of Lake Sebu! It took us only 15 minutes and we were on Falls No. 1

The highlight of the tour was the twin zipline ride as you hover over Falls No. 3, 4 and 5.

Falls 3, 4, 5
We documented our zipline ride through our various gadgets, action camera and cell phones. It was one awesome experience! My second time to experience the zipline ride of Lake Sebu!

Falls No. 7
After the zipline ride, we trekked Falls No. 7. It took us an hour before reaching our destination. But the effort was worth it! The trek back to the jump-off point was really exacting and taxing.

Falls No. 2
After reaching the jump-off point, we rested a bit and decided to explore Falls No. 2. But only Louie, Nilo, Faty and I joined the quest.

Lake Sebu
We took our lunch at the resto overlooking Falls No. 2. and after lunch headed to Tacurong City. By this time, we were now exchanging stories, jokes, laughs, and having a good time inside the van.

Along the way, we stopped at Sultan Kudarat Provincial Capitol for our souvenir pictures.

After 2 hours, we reached the Baras Bird Sanctuary in Tacurong City.

I have seen the bird sanctuary in Olango, Cebu and Candaba, Pamapanga. But this bird sanctuary is a must-visit bird sanctuary. The place is filled with hundreds of various species of birds.

After the bird watching, we spent the night at Tacurong City

Day 3

We woke up 3 am, packed, and left the hotel past 3:30 am. Our last and final destination was Barangay Dado, Alamada, North Cotabato. I took us more than 3 hours before reaching Barangay Dado. The road was rugged and not cemented.

We stopped at a local's house and hired our habal-habal ride to the falls. Again, everybody, enjoyed this ride to the falls!

The habal-habal ride was already the adventure!

After 20 minutes, we reached the jump-off point and took our group picture.

Then, the trek to the falls started.

While trekking, we enjoyed the view of North Cotabato.

Good thing the trail was good and it was already cemented.
The 376 steps down to the falls was our second adventure that day.

After walking for nearly 20 minutes, we sighted the falls.

Asik-Asik Falls

Personally, this was the best part of the tour!
I enjoyed the breathtaking view.
I enjoyed the trek.
I enjoyed the cool waters of the falls as we took a swim in the falls.
I enjoyed the lunch.
Most importantly, I saw smiles written on ALL my companions.

I promised myself that I will be back and explore the other falls of Alamada.

Before leaving, another set of souvenir pictures were taken.
Hooray to Asik-Asik Falls!!! =)

After lunch, we headed back to Koronadal City.
In Koronadal City, we took our sumptuous dinner.

Day 4

The following morning we headed towards General Santos Airport. But before the airport, we stopped at famous buko halo-halo of Saravia in Konadal City. Another must-try, must-eat in Mindanao!

We also stopped to buy pasalubong before proceeding to the airport.

Raine, Nilo and Gzel went to the airport. Beck, Red and Lawrence went to Sarangani. While Faty and I went to Davao.

We ended our group tour in Central Mindanao. Thanks to JJ Tours.

Day 5

Our tour in Mindanao was not yet over.

Faty and I went to Paradise Island in the Island Garden City of Samal.

Originally, the plan was river rafting. But last minute, Faty changed the adventure and decided instead to go to Samal. We paid only P200 as entrance fee to the resort.

We enjoyed snorkeling!

We explored the bay of Samal for 2 hours under the heat of the sun.

And we were treated with various specie of fish, corals and marine life.

Past 12 noon, we headed back to the hotel, fixed ourselves, and went to Davao International airport.

WE

definitely enjoyed our Central Mindanao Tour and our side trip tour to Davao!

The Perks of Traveling Alone

$
0
0
at Enchanted River
I started traveling alone in 2006 after I resigned in a Quezon City law firm wherein I was a partner. I made a major decision. And I decided to become a full-time teacher in Far Eastern University.

But teaching alone made me think again. I needed an outlet  I need to live my life to the fullest. I must explore, enjoy, and reap the fruits of my labor. I wanted to travel!

Then, the big question came. should I join a group tour or just simply travel alone?

As a teacher, I was given a handful of holidays, semestral breaks, and leaves for my travel. And so, I decided to TRAVEL ALONE..

And after ten years of traveling in the Philippines and in twelve countries, I want to share the benefits of traveling alone.

I know it is very difficult to convince people that traveling alone is better than traveling in a group. But let me share first the perks and the reasons why one should travel alone. And here are the reasons why you should.

1.YOU WILL FIND FREEDOM

Yes, freedom. Everybody wants freedom. Freedom from the hassles of life. Freedom from stress. Freedom to decide, to choose, and to explore. You will be the master of your own travel. Nobody will be there to convince, influence or worst annoy you in your travel.

2. YOU WILL HAVE FLEXIBILITY

The itinerary of one's travel is an important  factor for the success of your travel. You can now decide how long you would  stay in a specific destination. Even though you have an itinerary, if circumstances warrant, you can easily change your itinerary to your satisfaction. You do not have to adjust for your travel, your travel will adjust accordingly.

3.YOU CAN WORK ON YOUR BUCKET LIST

The Philippines offers various tourist destinations and it will work on your favor if you can travel at your phase and on your own choosing. Preparing the bucket list is another must for a traveler. The feeling of fulfillment once you accomplish a particular task is priceless. Now, you can focus on the destinations that you really wanted to explore.

4.YOU GET TO MEET NEW PEOPLE

Chances are if you are in a group tour you will not indulge in talking or mingling with other people or even strangers. But you have no choice when you are traveling alone, you simply have to talk and mingle with other people. Simply asking for directions for your destination is already reaching out to other people. Additionally, you will have plenty of time to experience, observe, and even practice the culture and traditions of the people that you encounter.

5.YOU HAVE THE CHOICE TO DO WHAT YOU WANT

Nobody is there to ruin or spoil your activities. You can indulge in spelunking, river rafting, trekking, waterfalls chasing, diving, snorkeling, wake boarding for hours. Simply enjoying your life without someone there to spoil it for you. You do not need to adjust to somebody else's needs. Your own needs is your priority!

6.YOU WILL BE EMPOWERED

The feeling of empowerment is in itself a motivation for you to travel alone. There are so many intangible benefits of traveling alone and probably this is one of the best reasons why you should travel alone. After working for hours, days, weeks, months or years, now you have the authority and opportunity to be responsible for the outcomes of your decision and live with it.

7.YOU WILL GAIN MORE CONFIDENCE

Traveling alone in Mindanao is in itself a big challenge. It gives you the extra dose of thrill, adventure and adrenaline. After your travel, you will feel more confident and you will crave for more. You survived being alone!

8.YOU CAN STAY WITH YOUR BUDGET

Budget is the primordial consideration for your travel. A backpacker's hotel is the best option for my stay. In my travels in Bukidnon, Sagada, Camiguin and Batanes, room rates vary from P150 to P300. You will not feel that awkward feeling of being left alone or behind or being envious to the accomplishment of another.

9.YOU WILL BECOME A BETTER DECISION MAKER

Along the travel you will make plenty of mistakes. Do not worry. It's normal. But your have to learn from your mistakes and never commit the same mistake on your next journey. On my part, I made a list of the errors that I have committed so that I will not commit it in  my next travel.

10.YOU WILL LEARN MORE ABOUT YOURSELF

Sitting alone either at the top of the mountain watching the sunrise, or in long stretch of the beach watching the sunset or in the hills of Batanes looking at the horizon, you will find time to discover yourself. You will have plenty of time to think about your past, present, and your future. You will learn new things about yourself along the journey. And you will definitely smile and be surprised!

At Tinuy-an Falls
Now since you are traveling alone. You need to be comfortable in your journey.

Traveling alone needs the proper gadgets and apparel for your travel.

It is important to document your travel. You can bring your own camera, tablet, notebook, cellular phones and other gadgets.

Another important aspect of traveling alone is wearing the best brands of apparel for your travel needs:

For your bags, jackets and shoes, you can choose from either The Northfaceor Columbia.

For your sandals, my favorite brand is Sandugo.

For your compression wear, Tesla compression wear offers the best and most affordable wear in the market today. Tesla compression wear is available at ZALORA Philippines.

Finally, take into consideration your own health and safety.

NOW we are ready to travel!

   Enjoy traveling alone! =)

How To Travel Alone in the Philippines

$

Mt. Pinatubo trek

There are no shortcuts or instant answer to this question.

You have to experience it first. And your experience will make you a better traveler. But for the meantime, I will give you tips on how to do it.

First of all. PLANNING is the key to your successful travel. You simply have to plan ahead.

There are plenty of questions to answer before you can start traveling alone. And I have listed herein some of the basic questions and tips in traveling alone.

1. When do you plan to travel?
There are three possible choices, summer, rainy season or during Christmas season.

You can enjoy hiking, island hopping, diving, snorkeling or beach bumming during summer. While during rainy season, you can indulge in spelunking, river rafting, or waterfalls chasing. And during Christmas season, you can enjoy the cold weather in Sagada, Baguio, Tagaytay or Banaue.

     2. The crucial question is what do you intend to do?

Do you intend to relax, explore or have an adventure of a lifetime?

If you are into adventure, there are various activities that you can try like spelunking, trekking/mountaineering, waterfalls chasing, river rafting, beach bumming, diving, snorkeling, nature tripping, nature photography, bird watching, whale watching, surfing, wake boarding, sand boarding, sky diving or cliff jumping, among others.

3. The next question is where are you going to travel?

You can choose from either Luzon, Visayas or Mindanao for your destination. You can surf and read travel blogs for the best destinations. My three best destinations are Sagada, Batanes, and El Nido.

4. Then, how much do you intend to spend?

You have to work on your budget. You need to save for your travel needs. And you need to start saving right now. Traveling entails a lot of expenses but it is worth every penny of it!

5. What are the places that you intend to do in your itinerary?

Reading travel blogs will give you an idea on what to do Make the best and detailed itinerary that is flexible and would fit your needs. Try new things in life. Life is short and you have to live it to the fullest!

6. How to book your travel?

It is better to ask the help or guidance of a learned person in booking. When I started to travel ten years ago, I had no knowledge on how to book my hotel or my ride. But I asked the help of my friend who was well-versed in the internet booking and after that I learned how to book on my own.

There are plenty of online hotel bookings such as agoda.com or booking.com, among others. But the best part of traveling alone is being a transient. You have no definite hotel booking simply because you do not have any idea how long you will stay in the area. Though it is a bit risky, you will have flexibility in your chosen destinations.

7. What to bring?

On the night prior to your travel, pack light and bring the travel accessories that you need. Bring an octopus adapter and a power bank.
boat ride to Basilan

        8. During the travel, what are you suppose to do?

              a. Be street smart

Always be on alert. You cannot be complacent. You have to be attentive and observant. Your own safety is your primary consideration.

      b. Travel light. Do not over pack

One bag will do. The bag should contain a weight of 7-10 kilos only.

      c. Bring the right apparel

My suggested brands are The Northface, Columbia or Deuter. For your compression needs, I highly recommend Tesla Compression wearTESLA Compression wear is available at ZALORA Philippines.

     d. Be careful of what you eat
Know your allergies and stuff that makes you uncomfortable.

    e. Wear sandals

 My suggested brand is Sandugo.

     f. Ask three times from different people for directions

If you get two same answers from two different people, then you are on the right course.

            g. Travel in the morning, check-in late in the afternoon

It usually rains in the afternoon. It is better to explore early in the morning.

           h. Always bring a jacket
My suggested brand is The Northface

    i. Put your money on separate pockets

Unfortunately, you have to be very cautious when you are traveling in  the Philippines.

   j. Bring a map

It pays to know where you are going. There are times that you cannot communicate with the local because you do not speak their dialect. By simply pointing at the map, the language barrier will be lessened a bit.

         k. Know whether there are ATMs or credit card facilities

There are still areas in the Philippines without ATMs or credit card facilities.

        l. Eat light. Drink light. Mingle more.

         Enjoy in moderation.

          m. Buy your souvenirs at the last destination

You do not want your bag to be very heavy.

   n. Know your limitations or injuries

Be aware of your asthma, high blood or bone injuries in your chosen adventure.

  o. Bring a plastic for your dirty clothes.

Segregate the clean clothes from the dirty ones.

 p. Inform your relatives where you are

But do not post in facebook or other social networking sites your present destination.

 q. Change your paper bills

The Philippines has sari-sari (retail) store and riding a local ride needs plenty of lower bills or coins.

 r. No deadly weapons in your travel

You do not need these weapons in your travel.

 s. Know the local customs and practices

      Respect is the word.

  t. Try the local food. Small amounts of everything

We have a variety of mouthwatering delicacies.

         u. Hire a guide, especially if you will be trekking

This is part of your own safety and security. You have no intentions of getting lost.

 v. Keep a low profile

Do not wear expensive jewelry and try to blend with the locals.

        w. Sleep at least six hours

You need the energy. Sleeping is the best way to regain strength in your travel.

         x. Rehydrate
We have  a very warm weather especially during summer.

  y. Expect the unexpected

This is part of being street smart.

 z. Watch the weather news at night

Knowing the weather is a must when you travel in a tropical country.

  And FINALLY!

Mt. Makilling trek

Trek to the Taal Crater Lake

$

There are always two sides of the coin.
And the trek to Taal Volcano has also two sides.
I explored the easy part  about three years ago (First Trek).
I dared to explore the other side last June 2015 with my friend "Buddy"
who happens to be a local in the town of Talisay, Batangas.

I arrived in Talisay, Batangas on board my motorbike. Talisay is just 25 minutes away from my hometown (Tanauan City). Buddy offered the boat for free (usual price is P1,500 - P2,000).

HOW TO GET THERE
Bus terminal can either be at Cubao (near GMA 7) or in Buendia, Pasay, Taft.
Better choice is Buendia-Taft.
Board the bus with the signage - "Batangas - LIPA-TANAUAN"
Do not board the one with the signage "CALABARZON!"
Normally, travel time is 1.5 - 2 hours. Fare is P99 (or if discounted 79). Alight in Tanauan City and ride the tricycle to the Talisay jeepney terminal. Fare is P10.00. The fare to Talisay is P26.00. Travel time is 30-40 minutes. Alight in Talisay and proceed to any of the resorts and they will offer the boat ride to Taal volcano.

Good thing the weather was alright that day and the boat ride to the island was smooth.

Napayong Island

Taal Lake contains islands and islets namely: Napayong, Bubuin, and Pirapiraso.

Pirapiraso
Travel time to the island was approximately 45 minutes after a brief engine trouble.

It became cloudy upon arrival in the Taal Volcano. We feared that it might rain heavily. But it did not dampen our spirits, we will trek Tall crater lake today!

With the help of some of the locals, we started our trek to the lake. Taal Volcano (the island itself is called "Pulo") is bordered by four towns namely:  Calauit, Lipa; Tibag, Talisay; Panikihan, Laurel; and Alas-as, and Pulang Bato, San Nicolas.

After 45 minutes of uphill ascent, we reached the viewing area.

The view was majestic!

But the exploration did not stop there. We proceeded towards the crater lake and it took us another 30 minutes of walking.

Finally, after 30 minutes, we reached the crater!

We  wandered around and took our souvenir pictures.

Buddy and his friends even took a dip in the crater lake.

We stayed for only 45 minutes and we headed back to the jump-off point.

The trek back to the boat was a bit more exciting for all of us.

Back at the viewing deck, we met some tourists from Metro Manila who were also trekking the Taal Volcano crater lake.

We ended our trek with a very sumptuous boodle fight and past 1 pm, we headed back to Talisay. Thank you Buddy for the Trek!

Shooting the Rapids in Pagsanjan Falls

I simply cannot have enough of the rapids of Pagsanjan Falls!
I had to do it again!

With a very dear friend, I went back to Pagsanjan, Laguna to relive my shooting the rapids experience in Pagsanjan. Last time I was here, I was with my friend Mek and we went to the various tourist spots in Laguna.

Everything went as planned and we were enjoying our boat ride to the falls.

How to get there

From Buendia, Manila or Cubao, board a bus (DLTB or Greenstar) going to Sta. Cruz, Laguna. Travel time from Manila to Sta. Cruz, Laguna is 2-3 hours depending on the traffic in Los Banos, Laguna. Fare is P140 from Buendia.

From Calamba, fare is P61 only (in some buses P80) and travel time is only 1 hour and 20 minutes.

Reaching the capital of Laguna (Sta. Cruz), board a jeep going to Pagsanjan and alight at any of the resorts for your shooting the rapids adventure.

Good thing the weather was sunny that day. Along the way, the view to the falls was really captivating and the ride was simply amazing.

The adventure began once we hit the rapids. Our boat was against the rapids.

There were a lot of tourists enjoying the rapids that day. We did not mind getting wet.

We were all smiles. And enjoying the boat ride.

During the boat ride, you have to take your souvenir pictures.

Finally, after nearly one hour, we reached Pagsanjan Falls!

The adventure will not be complete unless you go to the inner part of the falls and we did!

The current was so strong once you are inside the inner part of the falls.

After staying for an hour at the falls, we decided to go back. We took our lunch and headed back to Manila.

My 41st Birthday with my Fellow Travelers in Tanauan City, Batangas

This is the first time I am writing about my birthday.
I do not normally do this but I had to do it.

This blog is the celebration of my 41st birthday in Tanauan City, Batangas with my co-travelers last October 3, 2015. I made an event in Facebook as early as June 2015 but only a handful of my friends were able to grace my event. It took me more than a month to write this down after so many attempts. Guess I was busy in my teaching load in Far Eastern University.

The venue of the event was in Sunshine Garden Resort (Darasa, Tanauan City, Batangas).

The event was attended by my fellow travelers:
Red Chuca
Erwin Nuer
Onil Castillo
Rye Yan
Rodrigo Jonson Tinchuanco Acuzar Jr.
NRhico Garcia
Robz Reyes
Ma. Cherie D'amour
Jennielyn Torres
Lester Reyes Alvarez
Bnx Lobredo
Rubec Moyano
Norry Nepomuceno
Nelson Dona Aclan
Buddy
Jonas Reyes

It was actually one of the best, if not the best birthday celebration I have ever had in my 40 years of existence. I guess everybody enjoyed the drinking spree and the videoke.

Some of those who confirmed were not able to attend but the party must go on.

We were able to consume so many bottles of brandy and we had the best time of our lives!
I think Rod was able to consume a lot!

The following morning we woke up early, took breakfast in my place and we started our tour in Tanauan City. First stop was the Old Municipal Building of Tanauan, now the town's museum.

Second stop was St. John, the Evangelist's Church
One of the oldest churches in Batangas.

Third stop was President Jose P. Laurel's Ancestral Home.

Thereafter, we boarded the van towards our fourth destination. After 15 minutes, we arrived at Apolinario Mabini's Birthplace.

We roamed around the spot and even visited the museum.

After nearly 45 minutes in Mabini's Residence, we went to Talisay and went up to Tagaytay.

After the souvenir pictures were taken, we went to our last destination which is in Laurel, Batangas. It took us more than 45 minutes before reaching the place.

We trekked towards the falls. We had to cross the river more than three times before reaching the falls. The trail was light and it took us only 20 minutes.

We initially passed Malagaslas Falls but our destination was the other falls.

Finally, we reached our destination - Ambon-Ambon Falls!
We took our lunch and some souvenir pictures and then headed back to Malagaslas Falls.

The group took a dip at the cold waters of Malagaslas Falls!
Past 1 pm, we headed back to Tanauan City.
Reaching Tanauan City, we bid goodbyes to each other and I promised that there will be another birthday celebration next year. Again, all expenses will be paid (except for their transportation to Tanauan City).

See you again guys next year!
THANK YOU!!! =)

Happy Birthday to me

Adventures In United Arab Emirates (Dubai) Day 4

I spent eight days in Dubai and I divided my blog into four parts. This is part 2 or Day 4 and this is the Dubai City Tour. Using the Big Bus City Tour, the tour would have costed 1,500 Dirhams and I chose the cheaper alternative the Dubai City Tour which was only 650 Dirhams.

First in the itinerary was the old settlement in Dubai near the Creek.

Second stop was the Dubai Museum.

Third stop was a Mosque and I forgot the name of it. That is what I get for not blogging on time. This tour happened last November 2015.

Fourth stop was an antique shop named Oriental World.

Fifth stop was Burj Al Arab.

This was the best part of the tour!

Along the way, we passed by Wild Wadi Water Park.

Sixth stop was a hotel where they have golden horses. Yup! 18 Karat of Golden horses!

I love the City Tour! Dubai is such a nice place to tour.

Seventh stop was the Atlantis!

Last stop was Burj Khalifa!

I simply love Dubai City Tour.

Adventures in United Arab Emirates (Dubai and Abu Dhabi) Day 1-3

Last November 2015, while teachers and students were having our semestral break, I went to Dubai. I stayed in Dubai for eight days and as early as now, I am planning to go back on December 2016. I really enjoyed my stay in Dubai courtesy of the hospitality and cordiality of my previous students. I divided my trip into 4 blogs and this blog covers Day 1, 2, and 3. During these days, I was accompanied by my close friend, previous student, and fellow traveler and blogger MJ Corillo. This blog is for you MJ Corillo!

MJ was the one who arranged my visa and helped me find my affordable accommodation. She fetched me from the airport and accompanied me to my hotel.

with Ms. Bea Catipay

But before going to the hotel, I met my previous Tourism student (who happens to be one of the best Tourism students I've had in FEU) Ms. Bea Catipay at the arrival area of the airport.

Day 1

The following morning, I went to Dubai Mall where I was supposed to meet MJ for our first tour in Dubai.

And there I witnessed the grandeur and spectacle of Burj Khalifa.

Inside the mall, they have one of the world's biggest indoor aquarium.

MJ and I waited inside the mall for our first adventure,  the Desert Safari.

After waiting for nearly an hour, we went to to the jump-off point of the Desert Safari.

The 20-minute 4x4 Wheel Ride was simply amazing! I enjoyed the dune bashing! And we even stopped to have our sunset photography!

Upon arrival at the site, I did a bit of camel riding!

The show was about to start and we moved inside Sky Land Camp.

I enjoyed the buffet dinner, belly dancing and shisha!

But my personal favorite is donning the national attire of Dubai.

Day 2

MJ and I went to Abu Dhabi. We took the bus ride to Abu Dhabi.

Abu Dhabi has no metro train and instead we used the bus as our mode of transportation.

First stop in Abu Dhabi was the Yas Mall.

Second stop was the Ferrari World.

And the last stop was the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, the biggest Mosque in UAE.

The mosque is one of the most beautiful and biggest mosque I have ever seen in my years of travel.

And the sunset at the mosque was stunning and captivating!

Thereafter, we went back to Dubai and met my previous students.

After taking dinner, I went to Creek and broke some sweat jogging.

Day 3

On my third day, MJ and I went to Sharjah.

We went to Sahara Mall and took our breakfast and then went back to Dubai.

That afternoon, we went to Little Manila.

We walked a bit and went to the Creek.

We rode the traditional mode of water transport in Creek.

And the scenery in Creek was outstanding.

Last stop for the day, we went shopping at the Old Souk.

Thank you MJ for everything in Dubai!

This blog is the fifth day of my stay in Dubai.
I stayed in Dubai for eight days and I divided my blog into 4 parts.

Day 5

From an invite extended by my former student, I went to Dubai Marina Yacht Club.

Rjoy treated me to a sumptuous breakfast at Dubai Marina Yacht Club.

After the breakfast, we strolled along Dubai Marina Walk.

And one of the best places that I have seen in Dubai is the Dubai Marina. According to my friend, it is better to walk here at night. But I did not have the luxury of waiting that day. My itinerary for eight days was loaded with many adventures.

While strolling, we passed by Kellog's memory test and I did participate in the challenge!

Then we went to Jumeirah Beach Residence (JBR) Walk.

Just a couple more walks and we hit the Jumeirah Beach.

Then, we went to a bar and again Rjoy gave me a beer to replenish and enjoy the scenery.

I forgot the name of the mall and the bar. But the view was unforgettable!

My trip to Dubai will not be complete without boarding the Monorail.

And I did board it though it was a bit slow.

The Big Bus City Tour

Last stop with Rjoy was Emirates Mall.

Then, I boarded the Metro to Burj Khalifa.

With the kindness and grace of Ms. Nikka Martinez, I went to the top of Burj Khalifa free of charge. Thanks Nikka!

This is the world's tallest building (828 meters high) and the world's fastest elevator ride (ten meters per second).

I stayed at the top of Burj Khalifa until nightfall to see the famous skyline of Dubai.

Then, I immediately went down to witness the spectale of the Dubai Fountains!

The fountain light show was jaw-dropping!

Last stop for the night, Nikka and I went to Juice World.

After a couple of minutes, we met Kristine and Recia and enjoyed the juices we ordered and we rekindled their college life in Far Eastern University.

Thank you Rjoy and Nikka!

This is Part 4 or Day 6-7 of my blog in Dubai.
I stayed eight days in Dubai and I divided my blog into four parts.

I was excited on Day 6 of my adventure in Dubai. Finally, after so many years, I will get the chance of meeting one of my close students in Far Eastern University (FEU). We agreed to meet at the Mall of the Emirates and since there was no metro, I had to use the taxi.

Cath Conda finally arrived after a couple of minutes waiting. And our first stop that day was the Gold Souk. Imagine how far is the Mall of the Emirates to the Gold Souk and we had to use the taxi again. =)

I did a bit of window shopping and I was amazed to see the 24 and 18 karat gold of bracelets and necklaces.

with Cath Conda
We explored the vicinity and walked towards the nearest taxi stop.

Then, we boarded another taxi and went to Miracle Garden. Unfortunately, it was closed that day for renovation. I did a bit of peeking inside the garden.

Our excitement did not falter. We went back to the Mall of the Emirates but this time we used the metro which opened around 10 am.

And boarded another taxi to Deira to meet some of my former FEU students. There I met April and the rest of her classmates/friends.

After staying for nearly two hours with the group, we went back to the Mall of the Emirates again. But this time to see Cath's former classmate.

After waiting a bit, Judy arrived and we consumed an hour enjoying talking to each other. Thank you Judy for dropping by and the pasalubong

Last stop for the day was the World Village.

The Village exhibits the different nations of the world and their respective food, costumes and products. Cath and I roamed around for another hour.

We tasted some of the delicacies and took pictures of the various stalls.

I promised myself that I will be back again next year to see this village anew.

Then, Cath and I separated ways and the last person for me to meet that day was Chin. We met at the Creek.

Day 7

I did not add any thing to do on my last day in Dubai and I simply explored the streets of Dubai. My flight was slated past 7 pm and I had plenty of time to spare.

I even watched a movie at the Deira Mall.

Last person to meet in Dubai.

I tasted the shawarma for the last time in Dubai.

Past 5 pm, MJ escorted me back to the airport.

Boarded the plane and by chance, I met another of my former FEU student.

Thank you Cath for Day 6 in Dubai!

It was Christmas!
December 25, 2015
I went to Phuket, Thailand to relive my adventures.

As always, I was billeted in Sino Inn for 350 Baht/day  (total in Peso is P1,400) for a total of 4 days.

I arrived in Phuket 11:30 pm. Checked in at the hotel 2 am. The following morning, I booked my tours and late afternoon, I went to Patong Beach.

Normally, the payment for motorcyle ride is 300 Baht. But I was able to get it for 250 Baht. Taxi would have costed me 400 Baht.

After 25 minutes, I reached Bangla Walking Street.

Then, I went to Patong Beach and strolled around the beach for nearly 2 hours.

I waited for the sunset and took some pictures.

Then, walked Bangla Walking Street and observed the night life.

Later that evening, I went back to the hotel and took good sleep for my tours slated on the upcoming days. I'm back Thailand!!!

December 27, 2015
Third day in Phuket, Thailand

Original schedule was to go to Similan and Tachai Island Tour.
I guess I have to settle for the Racha and Coral Island Tour.

Originally, the price was 1,800 Baht. But Fon, staff of Sino Inn, was able to get it for 1,200 Baht. The following morning, I was waiting in Chalong Pier.

Exactly 9:30 am, we boarded the motorboat to start our tour.

The ride to the islands was really bumpy! The waves were very strong that morning!

After 30 minutes, we arrived at Coral Island. We stayed there for only 1 hour.

The other guests snorkeled, I took pictures and roamed the island.

Next stop, Racha Island (or Raya Island). It took us only 20 minutes before reaching the next island.

Raya Island was the place where we took our buffet lunch. Some of us walked and the others took a taxi!

After lunch, we went back to the beach.

I did not want to get wet! I roamed around the beach and again took souvenir pictures.

We stayed in the island for more than 2 hours. Thereafter, boarded the boat back to the mainland.

I rested at the hotel and then went to the night market. They have night market only during weekends.

And last part of the itinerary was seeing Alen Mae Almazan. Thank you Alen!

I LoveThailand!

Reliving Phuket (James Bond Tour) 2015

My third time in Phuket and I am craving for more adventures!

I had to repeat my James Bond Tour. But this time I paid the lesser amount. Thanks to Fon (staff in Sino Inn), I was able to get it for only 2,200 Baht (original price was 2,800 Baht).

I was fetched by the van in my hotel around 8 am and we waited at the jump-off point of Putri Patri Tour.

Exactly 9:30 am, we went to the pier to board the luxury boat.

Weather was nice that day and the sea was calm. The start of a great adventure!

Off we went to our voyage. The 4 in 1 Canoe Adventure is a must-try adventure in Phuket!

Along the cruise, I was again entertained by the superb and amazing scenery of Phuket.

After one hour, we are nearing Panak Island, an island laden with monkeys.

I boarded the canoe and off we went to the cave.

The cave reminded me of my adventures in PPUR in Palawan.

My guide explained the different rock formations inside the cave.

After getting out of the cave, my guide allowed me to paddle the canoe around the bay.

A long-tail boat! I've always wanted to try that!

I got tired and rested for a while.

After 30 minutes, we went to the next destination which was about 20 minutes away from Panak Island.

The Hong Island is my favorite among the three islands.

Again, my guide paddled me around Hong Bay. The view was simply spectacular!

We even went to the small openings of the cave in Hong Island.

And we roamed around for 30 minutes.

This is a picture of a guy having a great time in Phuket!

I was ALL SMILES! This is fun!

After the canoeing, buffet lunch was served to all the guests.

After lunch, we cruised to the last island destination. About 15 minutes away from Hong Island.

We boarded a long-tail boat in order to reach the opening of the island.

I relived my long-tail boat ride!

Finally, the James Bond Island in Phang Nga Islands.

We were allowed to stay only for 30 minutes and we waited for our ride back tp the luxury boat.

Last part of the trip was swimming time but I did not want to get wet.

After the tour, we were brought back to my hotel and I jogged at Rang Hill.

That night I also went to the Expo.

And my trip in Thailand will not be complete without a Thai massage.

One hour Thai massage for 300 Baht and. Shoulder, Back and Head massage for 380 Baht. It was a bit painful but it soothed all the pain away.

Amazing Thailand! I LOVE PHUKET!

My last day in Phuket.

I woke up early and jogged the uphill run to Rang Hill. Second time to do it, the first was not that successful.

Sun was just rising but it was covered by the trees and I had no clear shot.

It took me 20 minutes before I reached the top of the hill. What a way to start one's day!

I stayed for half an hour and descended. Along the way, I was tempted to eat the Thai Beef Noodle Soup!

I packed after eating and did some laundry. Afterwards, I started my last tour in Phuket. The motorcycle showroom tour! I started at Honda Big Wing!

I have to say that the kindest staff belonged to Honda. Honestly, I love Honda!!! In fact, I have 3 Honda motorcycles. 😀

I was fascinated by the variety of big bikes. This is heaven!!!

There were just so many bikes!

Then, I went to Yamaha and Suzuki.

Last stop was Kawasaki and I also love Ninja!

I love motorcycles.
I love the beach and the islands.
I love the adventures.
I LOVE THAILAND!!!

Celebrating New Year in Hanoi

Reaching the age of 40, I promised myself that I have to explore and do new things in life. And one of first thing that I have to do is to celebrate New Year outside the Philippines and the chosen country was Hanoi, Vietnam.

I spent 4 days in Phuket, Thailand. It was my third time to visit the place and again I promised myself that it would be the last. So from Phuket, I boarded the plane to Singapore. I spent the night at Changi Airport and the following morning boarded the flight to Ho Chi Minh. Reaching Ho Chi Minh, I boarded another flight to Hanoi. My second time to reach Hanoi!

From the airport, I boarded the taxi to my hotel. I paid 400,000 Baht for the fare. It took me almost an hour before reaching the heart of Hanoi. I was freezing! The temperature in Phuket was 32 degrees and in Hanoi 14 degrees. I was not prepared for the cold weather of Hanoi. In fact, I was wearing only a shirt and shorts. I did not know that it was winter in Hanoi.

After nearly an hour, I reached STARS HOTEL.

I paid only 14 USD for this room but the facilities, accommodation and staff were more than what I paid for.

The members of the staff were courteous, accommodating, respectful, always eager and happy to serve!

After check-in, I immediately went out and took my first meal in Vietnam - Pho Bo!

Then, searched for my favorite travel brand - Northface!

Day 2 -

The hotel was the one who booked my tour in Perfume Pagoda and Halong Bay Tour. And the price they offered was the best and cheapest! How did I know? I asked my fellow tourmates and the price I paid was always the lowest.

I went out while waiting for my bus service for my Perfume Pagoda Tour. And the weather was still 15 degrees!

The bus service arrived 8:30 am and we went to the jump-off point. Travel time was nearly 2 hours.

We stopped at a souvenir shop for 30 minutes and proceeded to our destination.

Finally, we arrived at the docking area.

We boarded the boat and the boat ride was 1 hour. After 1 hour, we docked at the opposite end.

The boat capacity is 5-6 pax and I was with 4 British and 1 Vietnamese.

The place was a sight for a sore eyes!

Then, we started to ascend for our lunch.

Weather was still freezing!

After the light trek, we reached the spot.

We were treated to a buffet lunch as part of the packaged tour we paid!

After lunch, we went to our cable ride.

My sixth time to experience a cable ride abroad!

Cable ride was good only for 15 minutes.

Then, we trekked towards the cave for 20 minutes.

Then, we reached the Perfume Pagoda Cave.

There were so many locals offering their prayers and flowers.

They were very intimate in praying.

After the tour, we descended. But this time, I did not use the cable car. I trekked for 50 minutes.

After 2 hours, I was back in Hanoi. I ate Bun Cha!

I enjoyed Bun Cha and even shared a beer with a French guy.

I went back to the hotel and Tony and Kim were kind and gracious in offering me to dine with them as part of their New Year celebration. I obliged! I ate duck and silkworm! I consumed so many rice wine and got drunk!

After dinner, I went to the lake area and for the first time, celebrated New Year outside the Philippines!

Happy New Year!

Thank you Tony, Kim, Hien and Xiao Tian!
Thank you STARS HOTEL for my superb and excellent stay in Hanoi!
Thank you also for the best-priced tours!

Around 8am, I was fetched by the bus for  my tour in Halong Bay. Travel time was 4 hours from Hanoi to Halong Bay by bus.

After 4 hours, we boarded a small boat and boarded the luxury or cruise boat for our Halong Bay Tour. There were only 12 of us for the said cruise.

We ate our lunch onboard the boat.

Luckily, I did not share the room with anyone!

And off we go to Halong Bay!

I was so happy! Finally, Halong Bay!

The scenic view of Halong Bay was spectacular!

Breathtaking! Amazing! Mesmerizing!

Past 3 pm, we went to our first spot as part of the itinerary of our cruise. We boarded again the small boat and docked in an island.

Our tour guide explained the importance of Halong Bay as one of the Seven Wonders of the World!

Thereafter, we ascended to the cave.

From the top of the cave, another breathtaking view of Halong Bay!

We explored the interior of the cave.

Spelunking in Halong Bay!

After an hour, we exited at the opposite side but the view was still jaw-dropping!

We went back towards the boat and enjoyed the scenery.

This is Halong Bay!

Later, we did another part of the itinerary, kayaking!

Kayaking was good only for one hour.

And with an Australian, I paddled around Halong Bay!

Past 8pm, we took our dinner on the cold waters of Halong Bay.

Day 4

The weather improved. It was only 17 degrees compared to the weather on the first day of 14 degrees. We have the sunlight that day.

And we continued to explore Halong Bay!

We went to Titop Island for our trek and swim.

Titop Island was named after a Russian cosmonaut who visited Vietnam.

We ascended for an hour.

And finally reached, the top of Titop Island.

I was all smiles at the top of the island.

Then, we descended. Some of my tourmates enjoyed the scenery and the others took a dip at the cold waters of Halong Bay.

Romantic indeed!

Then, we boarded the luxury boat and we went back to the mainland.

Last part of the itinerary was making the spring roll.

After 2 days and 1 night, we docked at the port.

Another 4-hour ride back to Hanoi and along the way, I saw the lake in Hanoi.

I ate another Vietnamese food!

Explored Old Quarter, the park and the lake.

I promised myself that I will be back!

Hanoi is a place for lovers.

The lake and the park were outstanding!

Before leaving Vietnam, I had to do last minute shopping at the night market.

And eat Bun Cha for the last time! Till my next travel in Hanoi!
